Excel to JSON Converter

Turn a sheet of an .xlsx workbook into JSON. Your workbook stays on your device.

  • Runs in your browser
  • No sign-up
  • No watermark

Choose an .xlsx file and get JSON. With the header option on, the first row gives the key names and each row becomes an object. Numbers stay numbers, TRUE and FALSE become booleans, empty cells become null, and dates are written as text like 2024-05-31.

You can convert one sheet or every sheet at once, keyed by sheet name. The file is read in your browser and not uploaded. Old .xls files are not supported, so save them as .xlsx first.

How to use Excel to JSON

  1. Choose an .xlsx file, or drop it onto the box.
  2. Pick a sheet, or All sheets together if the workbook has several.
  3. Choose whether the first row is the header, and the JSON layout.
  4. Copy the JSON or download it.

Frequently asked questions

Is my workbook uploaded?

No. It is read in your browser and stays on your device.

Does it support old .xls files?

No, only .xlsx and .xlsm. For an .xls file, open it in Excel or LibreOffice and save it as .xlsx, then convert that.

How are dates written?

Date cells become text such as 2024-05-31, or 2024-05-31 13:45:10 when there is a time. Time-only cells become 08:30:00. JSON has no date type, so they are strings.

What happens to empty cells and empty rows?

Empty cells become null. Rows that are completely empty are kept, with every value null, so the row positions match the sheet.

What do I get for a workbook with several sheets?

Pick one sheet to get its rows. Pick All sheets together to get one object with a key for each sheet name.

Are formulas calculated?

No. The tool reads the value Excel saved with the formula. Cells with no saved result come out empty.
