HTML to Markdown Converter
Turn HTML into clean Markdown. Your code stays on your device.
- Runs in your browser
- No sign-up
- No watermark
Paste HTML or the source of a page, or choose an .html file, and get Markdown. Headings, bold and italic, links, images, nested lists, code blocks, block quotes, horizontal rules and tables are converted, and tables use the GitHub format. Scripts and styles are dropped.
The HTML is read by your browser's own parser and nothing is uploaded. Page layout, colours and fonts have no Markdown equivalent, so they are not carried over.
How to use HTML to Markdown
- Paste your HTML, or choose or drop an .html file.
- Pick the bullet character, and choose whether to keep images and escape special characters.
- Check the Markdown in the output box.
- Copy it or download a .md file.
Frequently asked questions
Is my HTML uploaded?
No. It is parsed and converted in your browser. Scripts in the HTML are not run.
Which elements are converted?
Headings, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, links, images, ordered and unordered lists including nested ones, task list checkboxes, inline code, code blocks with a language, block quotes, horizontal rules, line breaks and tables.
What is lost?
Styling, classes, colours, fonts, layout, forms, buttons, iframes, video and scripts. Content is kept, but how it looked is not. Tables with merged cells are flattened because GitHub tables have no merged cells.
What does the escape option do?
It puts a backslash before characters Markdown would treat as formatting, such as * and [ ], so plain text stays plain. Turn it off if you want cleaner output and your text has few such characters.
Can I convert a whole web page?
Yes, if you paste its source code. Navigation menus and footers are converted too, so you may want to paste only the part you need.
Do tables work?
Yes. They become GitHub style tables. The first row is used as the header, and left, right and centre alignment is kept when the HTML sets it.
