Compress Image re-saves your pictures at a quality you choose and shows the size before and after for every file. It works best on photos saved as JPG or WebP, where a slightly lower quality gives a much smaller file with little visible change.
PNG is lossless, so this tool compresses it by re-encoding, which often does not shrink the file. When the new copy would be larger, the tool keeps your original and says so. For a big saving on a PNG photo, save it as JPG or WebP instead.
How to use Compress Image
- Choose one or more images, or drop them onto the box.
- Set the quality with the slider and pick an output format, or keep the original.
- Select Compress images and check the before and after size of each file.
- Download each file or all of them as a ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. Compression runs in your browser and your images never leave your device.
What quality should I choose?
Around 70 to 85 percent is a good range for photos on websites and in email. Go lower for the smallest file and check the result by eye.
Why did my PNG not get smaller?
PNG is lossless, and a browser can only re-encode it, not trade quality for size. If the re-encoded copy is not smaller, the tool keeps your original file. Choose JPG or WebP as the output format for a real reduction, though PNG transparency is lost in JPG.
Can a compressed image be larger than the original?
It can happen when the original was already well compressed. In that case the tool tells you and gives you the original instead.
Is WebP smaller than JPG?
Usually, at similar visual quality. WebP is supported by all current browsers, but some older apps cannot open it.
Will compressing remove photo details like location?
Yes, as a side effect. The image is redrawn, so camera and location metadata are not copied to the new file. The Remove EXIF tool does this on purpose.
Can I get back the original quality?
No. Lossy compression discards detail for good. Keep your original file and download the compressed copy.
